Part I: in the University
Think about your career after graduation and take courses which will help you in your major. You have to try and project which careers will be worthwhile and plentiful upon graduation. You have to understand your primary job is to work hard and demonstrate your ability to master the material and obtain grades that stand out. Try hard not to just memorize but understand why. Employers do not want to hear about excuses why your grades are below average. Take the opportunity to volunteer for study groups and learn how to get along with all groups of people. Practice leading small teams. You must begin to learn how to communicate orally and improve your writing skills.
If you are an international student, you need to decide where you want to work after graduation. Find out what you need to do from other successful international students about how to navigate visas and work permits. Seek counsel before you hit your junior year. Learn to master English if you plan on working in the U.S.
Part II: Early Career
Be really good at what you do. Work harder and be committed to what your employer is trying to do. Be a student of your company's culture. Don't be a whiner or complainer. Keep up with current professional development and improve your technical skills. Your technical skills will be needed throughout your career. Improve your social skills whether that is in networking, socializing or just getting along with people. Understand your job is to make your supervisor or team look good. Seek out and work for good leaders.
Part III: Mid Career
Seek and learn how to manage teams. Understand your leadership style and develop complimentary leadership skills (read some good books). Study good and bad leaders and understand what makes them different. Begin to assess your tolerance for risk. Continue to improve your communication skills both written and oral.
By now, you should be a seasoned, confident professional who is responsible for his or her career. If you haven't already, assess where you want to be from an industry and position perspective. Look for ways to increase your experience and skill sets in the areas that are needed for those positions. Your reputation will be known and people will seek you out for various positions. Gauge whether they will prepare you for future levels of responsibility and take calculated risks.
